Short answer: As of September 2026, the five highest-scoring roofing contractors in the San Antonio-New Braunfels, TX metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Ideal Precision Roofing & Exteriors, LLC (93.3), Twin Hammers Roofing & Contracting (91.9), Kresta Roofing and Consulting, LLC (91.7), Kidd Roofing (88.6), Presidio Roofing Company of San Antonio (85.2). Each holds a certification we verified on the manufacturer’s own register, every rating was corroborated elsewhere, and placement on this page is not for sale.
The Roofing Brief scored 14 certified roofing contractors serving the San Antonio metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top five individually to confirm its record. Texas licenses no roofers at all, and San Antonio takes 511 damaging-hail reports a decade, one of the heaviest counts in this programme. That pairing, heavy hail and zero state regulation, is exactly the environment storm-chasing crews exploit. It is also why every company below is measured on credentials that can actually be revoked.
The conditions a San Antonio roof has to be specified for
San Antonio sits under the biggest hail in this programme. The metro logged 616 hail reports over the decade, 511 of them an inch or larger and 94 at two inches or more, and on 28 April 2021 a storm survey team working with the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety measured a 6.42-inch hailstone at Hondo, the largest in any metro we have profiled. Five years earlier, the hailstorm of 12 April 2016 caused about $1.4 billion in insured losses across San Antonio and Bexar County, at the time the costliest hail event in Texas history.
Against that, Texas offers no roofing licence at all: no exam, no state register, no board that can discipline a roofer. The City of San Antonio’s permit is therefore one of the few formal checks available. A contractor must obtain a city permit to re-cover or replace a roof, and a straightforward replacement that does not change the roof pitch can generally be issued over the counter by the Development Services Department. Ask for the permit number, and treat any suggestion that your job is too small to need one as a reason to call someone else.
April is the peak month and spring is the season, so the sales cycle follows the storms. After a large hail day the metro fills with crews offering free inspections and contingency agreements. Texas law gives you three days to cancel many contracts signed at your home, but the better protection is sequence: get your insurer’s adjuster to produce a scope of loss before you sign anything, and never accept an offer to absorb or waive your deductible, which is a criminal matter in Texas rather than a favour.
With hail this size, specification matters more here than in most markets. A UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated shingle, a stone-coated steel system or a heavier-gauge standing seam roof all buy real protection against two-inch stones, and your insurer may credit the premium for one. Ask for the product’s impact rating in writing, keep the certificate with your policy documents, and photograph the installation: after the next storm, that paperwork is what distinguishes a claim from an argument.

What 6.42 inch hail does to a San Antonio roof
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 8 counties of the San Antonio-New Braunfels, TX statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 616 hail reports, 247 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 17 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $1.4 billion; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on San Antonio in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 April 2021 | 6.42 in | Hondo | Medina |
| 28 April 2021 | 6.0 in | Hondo | Medina |
| 3 May 2021 | 5.5 in | Sayers | Bexar |
| 28 April 2021 | 5.0 in | Hondo | Medina |
| 3 May 2021 | 4.5 in | Martinez | Bexar |
| 12 April 2016 | 4.5 in | Grey Forest | Bexar |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 28 April 2021 near Hondo, measured at 6.42 inches. That is grapefruit sized. Stones that big destroy asphalt shingles outright, dent metal, crack tile and routinely total roofs across whole neighbourhoods.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 96 knots, about 110 mph, near Medina on 28 April 2021. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
Tornadoes. 17 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Alamo Hgts on 19 February 2017.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 28 April 2021 event near Medina, reproduced verbatim:
An NWS Storm Survey Team determined that the majority of wind damage in and around Hondo was caused by straight line thunderstorm winds estimated at 75 to 110 mph. Two metal buildings had their large doors blown in or out and parts of the metal roofing was blown off a building near the South Texas Regional Airport at Hondo. There was widespread tree damage and multiple center pivot irrigation systems toppled by the severe wind.
That is what the specification has to anticipate here, written up by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in April (295), May (259), March (127). The worst years on record were 2016 (124), 2021 (118), 2023 (115). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in San Antonio, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.
Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.
What to do with this. At 511 damaging-hail reports in ten years, impact resistance in San Antonio is a specification question, not an upsell. Ask every contractor you shortlist to quote a UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated shingle alongside the standard option, and ask your insurer whether a Class 4 roof earns a premium discount, because many carriers offer one in high-hail territory.
The checks worth making in San Antonio
There is no state roofing licence in TX. Texas does not issue or require a state roofing contractor licence. There is no state exam, no state licence number to check, and no state board that can discipline a roofer.
The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) runs a voluntary Licensed Roofing Contractor program requiring two years of Texas experience, a fixed business address, a business and safety exam and a roofing exam at 70% or better, and at least $300,000 general liability insurance for residential work or a $100,000 surety bond.
That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.
Check here: RCAT licensed contractor lookup. Many Texas cities still require roofers to register with the municipality and pull a permit, so check with the city building department where the work will happen.
Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these San Antonio rankings were produced
Every contractor in the San Antonio-New Braunfels, TX pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 14 certified contractors, of whom 5 hold President’s Club standing and 9 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.829. The top five were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. The findings are printed above whether they flatter the contractor or not, and nobody paid to appear.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page.
