Best Roofers in Lubbock, TX: 5 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of September 2026, the five highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Lubbock, TX metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Hartman Roofing (79.9), Andrus Brothers Roofing Inc (73.0), Plains Roofing Co Inc (71.1), Schrader Roofing Company of Lubbock (69.8), West Texas Commercial Roofing LLC (68.2). All of them carry a verifiable manufacturer certification, every rating here was cross-checked against an independent record, and no money changed hands for any placement.

The Roofing Brief scored 6 certified roofing contractors serving the Lubbock metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top five individually to confirm its record. Texas issues no roofing licence at all, so on the South Plains the only credential that means anything is a voluntary one, and it separates this field cleanly. Three of the six certified contractors here hold a Roofing Contractors Association of Texas licence with a number against their name in the local chapter’s own directory; a fourth is a member with no licence number recorded; and two appear in neither. That matters in a metro carrying $235.7 million in reported storm damage over the decade and 232 hail reports of an inch or more, with five inch stones logged three separate times. The other thing worth knowing before you get a quote is that Lubbock’s replacement roof permit is a flat $75, so it is never a meaningful line item.

What a Lubbock roof is up against

The South Plains hail season is short, violent and almost entirely in May. Across 2016 to 2025 the six counties logged 272 hail reports, 232 of them an inch or larger, alongside 344 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 44 tornado events. Counting severe-weather reports of every kind together, May alone accounts for 250 against 168 in June and 65 in July. Reported property damage over the decade totals $235.7 million, the highest of any metro in this programme’s recent batches. Five inch hail has been logged three times: near Anton on 5 June 2025, near Post on 22 May 2016 and near Pettit on 28 May 2024. Inside Lubbock County itself the largest stone we could source is the 4.50 inch hail measured at 98th Street and Upland Avenue on 23 June 2023, when a supercell crossed the south side of the city, with 4.00 inch hail near Woodrow the same evening.

One event shows what this climate does to buildings. NWS Lubbock’s summary for 28 and 29 May 2024 records 5.00 inch hail northeast of Whiteface and 4.50 inch south-southeast of Pep, both in Hockley County, followed overnight by a bow echo with estimated 110 to 120 mph winds at Levelland that destroyed the Penny Newman cotton gin. Five inch hail is roughly the size of a grapefruit and no asphalt shingle made survives it, impact-rated or not; 120 mph straight-line wind is a separate failure mode that tests fastening and edge metal rather than the granule surface. A roof on the South Plains has to answer both questions, which is why the fastening schedule and the impact rating are both worth putting in writing.

Because Texas has no state roofing licence, the credential question here is unusually clear-cut. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas runs a voluntary Licensed Roofing Contractor programme in place of state licensure: an applicant must have been a principal of a Texas-based roofing company with a physical location for at least two continuous years, and residential applicants must carry general liability cover. The local chapter, the Lubbock Area Roofing Contractors Association, publishes a directory of its 28 member firms with the RCAT licence class and number held by each qualifying principal. Checking a Lubbock roofer against that directory takes a minute and tells you more than any badge on a truck. Separately, the City of Lubbock requires contractors to register annually, at $65 for a general contractor, backed by a $20,000 bond or $100,000 of general liability cover.

Two local rules are worth raising directly with whoever quotes you. First, a like-for-like replacement roof does require a City of Lubbock permit, and the fee is a flat $75 for residential or commercial work rather than a percentage of the job, which is why a quote that treats permitting as a significant cost deserves a question. Lubbock also introduced an affidavit process for residential roof replacement under which the contractor completes an interior inspection form and files it with Building Safety before a final inspection can be scheduled, with implementation from 1 October 2026, so any job starting now falls under it. Second, Texas law forbids a roofer absorbing your deductible: House Bill 2102 of 2019 added Insurance Code Chapter 707, requiring an insured to pay any deductible applicable to a first-party claim, and made it an offence to represent otherwise. A contractor offering to cover your deductible on the South Plains is offering something the legislature specifically prohibited. Lubbock enforces the 2021 International Residential Code, adopted in 2024, and the median year built in Lubbock County is 1986.

1. Hartman Roofing — TRB Score 79.9

Hartman Roofing is based in Lubbock, TX, in business since 1996, led by Justin Phillips, Owner, BBB accredited since 9 July 1996, A+ rating; business start date 13 June 1996, zero complaints closed in the last three years, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: Master Elite (GAF), RCAT Commercial & Residential Roofing License #03-0263, Lubbock Area Roofing Contractors Association member, CertainTeed, Malarkey Roofing Products, DECRA stone-coated steel installer, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce member. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

  • Listed as an RCAT contractor at 2108 109th St, Lubbock, member since 2017, with Commercial & Residential Roofing License #03-0263 held by qualifying principal Justin Phillips.. Roofing Contractors Association of Texas
  • A+ rating, accredited since 9 July 1996, business start date 13 June 1996, owner Justin Phillips, zero complaints closed in the last three years.. BBB business profile
  • Listed as a Chamber member in the roofing contractors category at 2108 109th St, Lubbock.. Lubbock Chamber of Commerce

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roof replacement and repair, hail and wind damage work, stone-coated steel and metal roofing, TPO and flat systems, soffit and fascia, and roof inspections for real estate transactions.

Why it ranks here. The top score in the metro, and the strongest credential stack on the page. It holds the full RCAT Commercial and Residential Roofing licence, #03-0263, verifiable by number in the association’s own directory, alongside CertainTeed and Malarkey credentials and a DECRA stone-coated steel certification. Twenty-nine years of trading with BBB accreditation running back to 1996 and no complaints closed in three years, and the same address appears consistently across its own site, the BBB, RCAT and the chamber.

Best fit for: The default first call in Lubbock, and the clear choice for stone-coated steel or a metal roof on a hail-exposed house.

What we would want clarified. Its own site gives a 1996 founding, which the BBB corroborates, but the RCAT listing records 1992, so the exact start date depends on which record you read. At 137 reviews its customer record is mid-range for this metro rather than the deepest. It publishes no City of Lubbock contractor registration number, though the city operates no public register to check one against. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (806) 763-8500, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

2. Andrus Brothers Roofing Inc — TRB Score 73.0

Andrus Brothers Roofing Inc is based in Lubbock, TX, in business since 1981, led by Jerry Andrus, President; Randy Metzler, Vice President; Melissa Andrus-Proffitt, Treasurer, BBB accredited since 17 January 1994, A+ rating; Lubbock entity start date 21 February 1992, one complaint closed in the last three years, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: Master Elite (GAF), RCAT Residential Roofing License #01-0260, Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster, Versico Gold Medal Quality, Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau, Gerard Metal Roofing, National Roofing Contractors Association member, West Texas Home Builders Association member, New Mexico Roofing Contractors Association member, Lubbock Area Roofing Contractors Association member. What they actually do. Residential and commercial roof replacement, storm damage work, composition shingles, metal roofing, wood shakes, tile, gutters and skylights, from Lubbock, Amarillo and Midland offices.

Why it ranks here. By far the most heavily credentialed contractor in this metro and one of the most in the programme: ten credentials outside GAF, including Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster, a Versico commercial credential, the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau and National Roofing Contractors Association membership, plus an RCAT residential licence by number. Founded in Amarillo in 1981 by Jerry and Steve Andrus, it opened the Lubbock office in 1989 and Midland in 2005, and has held BBB accreditation since January 1994.

Best fit for: Wood shake, tile or cedar work, and anyone who wants the deepest manufacturer credentialing available locally.

What we would want clarified. Its RCAT licence is the residential-only class, #01-0260, rather than the combined commercial and residential class the leader holds, so on a commercial or mixed-use building the credential does not reach as far. Founding dates conflict across records: 1981 on its own site for the Amarillo original, against a 21 February 1992 start for the Lubbock corporation at the BBB. It carries one complaint closed with the BBB in the last three years, and at 82 reviews and 4.6 its customer record is the shallowest of the top three. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (806) 798-7663, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

3. Plains Roofing Co Inc — TRB Score 71.1

Plains Roofing Co Inc is based in Lubbock, TX, in business since 1939, led by Jimmy Garth, President; Shanna Garth, Vice President; Travis Warmoth, RCAT qualifying principal, BBB accredited since 1 March 1981, A+ rating; business start date 1 January 1978, zero complaints closed in the last three years, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: Master Elite (GAF), RCAT Commercial & Residential Roofing License #03-0480, Lubbock Area Roofing Contractors Association member, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce member. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing and maintenance, hail damage repair, real estate roof inspections, composition shingles, cedar shakes, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, metal and tile, built-up tar and gravel, and roof coatings.

Why it ranks here. The longest-running name in Lubbock roofing and one of only two firms here holding the full RCAT Commercial and Residential licence, #03-0480. Its BBB accreditation dates to March 1981, the earliest on this page, with no complaints closed in three years. It is also the only contractor in the metro to list Class 4 impact-resistant shingles as a distinct service line, which in a metro with 232 large-hail reports and three separate five inch events is the single most relevant product decision a homeowner makes here.

Best fit for: A Class 4 impact-resistant replacement, and low-slope or built-up work alongside a house roof.

What we would want clarified. Read the founding date carefully. The company says locally owned and operated since 1939, while the BBB and RCAT both record the current corporation’s start as 1 January 1978, so 1939 describes the business lineage rather than the entity you would contract with. It only joined RCAT in 2024, so the licence is recent even though the firm is not, and at 33 reviews it has the thinnest customer record of the five ranked here. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (806) 748-0702, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

4. Schrader Roofing Company of Lubbock — TRB Score 69.8

Schrader Roofing Company of Lubbock is based in Lubbock, TX, in business since 2020, led by Robbie L. Sanders, Owner, BBB accredited since 27 January 2021, A+ rating; business start date 6 January 2020, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: Certified (GAF), Roofing Contractors Association of Texas member, 2026, Lubbock Area Roofing Contractors Association member, New Mexico contractor licence #405485. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

What they actually do. Commercial roofing installation and repair, residential roofing and replacement, and sheet metal fabrication.

Why it ranks here. A clean 5.0 across 68 reviews with BBB accreditation at A+ since 2021, founded in January 2020 by Robbie Sanders after 32 years in the trade. It is one of only two firms here that publishes a licence from another state, a New Mexico contractor licence, which is relevant given how much of this market’s work follows hail across the state line.

Best fit for: Sheet metal work and commercial roofs, and homeowners weighting a clean recent record over long tenure.

What we would want clarified. Its RCAT and LARCA listings carry no licence number, so it is recorded as a member rather than a licensed contractor, and its membership dates only from 2026. Note also that it is not a branch of the older Schrader Roofing in Amarillo: that is a separate business, started in 1988 under different ownership, and neither company’s records state any relationship between them, so do not read the shared name as shared history. At five years it is the youngest firm ranked here. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

5. West Texas Commercial Roofing LLC — TRB Score 68.2

West Texas Commercial Roofing LLC is based in Lubbock, TX, in business since 2021, led by Adam J. Dawson, Owner, BBB accredited since 20 December 2021, A+ rating; business start date 28 June 2021, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: Certified (GAF), New Mexico contractor licence #408432. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roof replacement, roof repair, storm damage response and inspections, in asphalt shingle, metal and TPO.

Why it ranks here. The name understates it: residential roof replacement is a genuine service line here, not an incidental sideline. The company runs dedicated residential roofing and replacement pages setting out a full process from free inspection and insurance coordination through to quality-assurance inspection and cleanup, lists the materials it installs on houses, and publishes manufacturer warranties of ten to thirty years alongside a separate workmanship warranty. The Better Business Bureau independently describes it as doing residential work, and rates it A+ with accreditation since 2021.

Best fit for: A homeowner who also has a commercial building, or a TPO section on a house.

What we would want clarified. It appears in neither the RCAT contractor directory nor the LARCA member directory, so in a state where that voluntary licence is the only roofing credential available, it holds none and is not a member of the local chapter. It is the youngest business on this page at four years, its 79 reviews are a modest record, and it publishes a New Mexico contractor licence but no Texas credential, because Texas issues none. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (806) 416-7663, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

The 232 hail reports behind a Lubbock roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 6 counties of the Lubbock, TX statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 272 hail reports, 344 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 44 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $235.7 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Lubbock in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
5 June 2025 5.0 in Anton Hockley
22 May 2016 5.0 in Post Garza
28 May 2024 5.0 in Pettit Hockley
23 June 2023 4.5 in Wolfforth Lubbock
29 April 2025 3.5 in Post Garza
5 June 2025 3.25 in Morton Cochran Co Ar Cochran

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 5 June 2025 near Anton, measured at 5.0 inches. That is grapefruit sized. Stones that big destroy asphalt shingles outright, dent metal, crack tile and routinely total roofs across whole neighbourhoods.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 104 knots, about 120 mph, near Levelland on 29 May 2024. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 44 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near New Home Arpt on 5 May 2019.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 29 May 2024 event near Levelland, reproduced verbatim:

An NWS storm survey team observed damage to utility poles, trees, and center pivots in and around Levelland. Damage escalated in both coverage and intensity east of US Highway 385 with a concentrated area of damage noted in and around Kauffman Park. Here, winds of 90 mph to 120 mph caused partial failures to some roofs and completely destroyed several wooden outbuildings. Many homes and vehicles suffered broken windows with roughly one dozen trees uprooted. One home lost roughly 30 percent of its roof and insulation while a wooden framed workshop in its backyard was completely destroyed and blown two homes away. Numerous wooden and metal fences were also heavily damaged or destroyed. The…

That is the kind of damage a roof in this metro has to be specified against, described by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in May (250), June (168), July (65). The worst years on record were 2025 (123), 2019 (85), 2024 (73). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Lubbock, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.

What to do with this. At 232 damaging-hail reports in ten years, impact resistance in Lubbock is a specification question, not an upsell. Ask every contractor you shortlist to quote a UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated shingle alongside the standard option, and ask your insurer whether a Class 4 roof earns a premium discount, because many carriers offer one in high-hail territory.

How to tell a Lubbock roofer’s claims from their record

There is no state roofing licence in TX. Texas does not issue or require a state roofing contractor licence. There is no state exam, no state licence number to check, and no state board that can discipline a roofer.

The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) runs a voluntary Licensed Roofing Contractor program requiring two years of Texas experience, a fixed business address, a business and safety exam and a roofing exam at 70% or better, and at least $300,000 general liability insurance for residential work or a $100,000 surety bond.

That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.

Check here: RCAT licensed contractor lookup. Many Texas cities still require roofers to register with the municipality and pull a permit, so check with the city building department where the work will happen.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How deep the Lubbock certified market really is

6 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Lubbock, TX statistical area, of which 0 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 411 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.7. The statistical area had a 2024 population of 367,109, a change of 4.51% against the 2020 census base, per the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates.

How these Lubbock rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Lubbock, TX pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 6 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 3 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.7. The top five were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Good and bad findings are published together, and no contractor paid for a place here.

Set aside in Lubbock. A contractor that would otherwise have scored into the top five was removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.

  • Carpenter Roofing Company Inc, which scored 61.7: placed sixth on score and we have left it unranked rather than promoted, but it is worth naming because the reason is the same test this page applies to everyone. It is a second-generation family business trading since 1982 from a company-owned building on Buddy Holly Avenue, BBB accredited at A+ since 2014 with no complaints closed in the last three years, and there is nothing adverse on its record at all. What it does not have is any roofing credential: it appears in neither the RCAT contractor directory nor the LARCA member directory, and it states on its own site that it is licensed and insured in Texas without giving a number, which in a state that issues no roofing licence cannot be checked. Where six contractors are separated mainly by which voluntary credentials they hold, a firm with none does not rank above firms with them, even a long-established one

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?

No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on the top five.

What was the worst hailstorm in Lubbock in the last ten years?

The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Lubbock, TX statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 5.0 inches, reported near Anton on 5 June 2025. That is grapefruit sized. Stones that big destroy asphalt shingles outright, dent metal, crack tile and routinely total roofs across whole neighbourhoods. Across the decade the metro recorded 272 hail reports. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $235.7 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

When is the worst time of year for roof damage in Lubbock?

Severe-weather reports in the Lubbock, TX statistical area cluster in May, June, July, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Scheduling discretionary work away from that window tends to get you a better crew and a faster start, because nobody is juggling emergency callouts.

Do roofers need a licence in TX?

Texas does not issue or require a state roofing contractor licence. There is no state exam, no state licence number to check, and no state board that can discipline a roofer. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) runs a voluntary Licensed Roofing Contractor program requiring two years of Texas experience, a fixed business address, a business and safety exam and a roofing exam at 70% or better, and at least $300,000 general liability insurance for residential work or a $100,000 surety bond.

What should I check before hiring a roofer in Lubbock?

Many Texas cities still require roofers to register with the municipality and pull a permit, so check with the city building department where the work will happen.

Is Lubbock a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Why is Carpenter Roofing Company Inc not on this list?

Placed sixth on score and we have left it unranked rather than promoted, but it is worth naming because the reason is the same test this page applies to everyone. Where six contractors are separated mainly by which voluntary credentials they hold, a firm with none does not rank above firms with them, even a long-established one.
