Best Roofers in New York, NY: 5 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of September 2026, the five highest-scoring roofing contractors in the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Jersey Roofing (92.1), Brothers Aluminum (89.4), American Home Contractors (88.9), Donny’s Home Improvement (88.5), American Roofing and Siding (87.9). Each holds a certification we verified on the manufacturer’s own register, every rating was corroborated elsewhere, and placement on this page is not for sale.

The Roofing Brief scored 24 certified roofing contractors serving the New York metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top five individually to confirm its record. None of the five highest-scoring certified roofers for the New York metro has an address in the five boroughs. Four work from northern New Jersey and one from Valley Stream on Long Island, 11 to 25 miles from the centre. The best-scoring firms based in the city, two Master Elite contractors in the Bronx with more than 320 reviews each, rank eleventh and twelfth, because seventeen of this metro’s twenty-four certified contractors hold the higher President’s Club tier. That geography matters because roofing is licensed locally here, not by the state. New York State issues no roofing licence, but New York City requires a Home Improvement Contractor licence from its Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties each license contractors separately, and New Jersey requires state registration. A contractor licensed on one side of the Hudson is not automatically licensed on the other. The weather is wind first: 2,153 severe wind reports in ten years, peaking in July.

Hail, codes and what they cost a New York homeowner

Check the licence that matches the address of the house, not the contractor. Inside the five boroughs, anyone doing home improvement work on a residence needs a Home Improvement Contractor licence from the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, which requires passing an exam and carrying insurance. Nassau County’s Department of Consumer Affairs licenses roofing contractors by name, and Suffolk and Westchester counties run their own licences. In New Jersey, home improvement contractors register annually with the state Division of Consumer Affairs, and a homeowner has three business days to cancel a signed home improvement contract for a full refund. Four of the five companies below are New Jersey firms, so a Queens or Brooklyn homeowner should ask for the city licence number specifically.

New York City adds a roof rule of its own. Local Laws 92 and 94 of 2019 require a sustainable roofing zone, meaning solar panels of at least 4 kW, a green roof, or a combination, on new buildings and complete roof replacements, with exemptions where the structure cannot carry the load or conditions are unsuitable. Replacing only a waterproofing membrane does not trigger it. On a flat-roofed rowhouse or apartment building, ask whether the proposed work counts as a complete roof replacement under Department of Buildings rules, because that decides whether solar or a green roof becomes part of the price.

Wind, not hail, is the recurring roof threat. The metro logged 2,153 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports over the decade against 270 hail reports, and July alone accounts for 867 of the total. The strongest measured gusts come off the Jersey Shore: 93 mph at Beach Haven on 3 June 2020, and straight-line winds of about 100 mph that a National Weather Service team surveyed in Wall Township near the Monmouth Jet Center on 1 November 2019. Tornadoes are infrequent but real, 40 in ten years, including EF2s at Kent in Putnam County in May 2018 and on the shore of Barnegat Bay in July 2021. The largest hail, 2.5 inches, fell at Hillsdale in Bergen County on 8 July 2021.

Much of the boroughs’ attached housing sits under low-slope membrane roofs, while the suburbs of New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester are dominated by pitched shingle roofs, and the two call for different experience. The President’s Club firms that lead this ranking are predominantly suburban exterior remodelers. If you own a flat-roofed building in the city, ask each contractor for recent membrane jobs inside the five boroughs, and give a well-reviewed city-based certified firm outside this top five a fair hearing: the difference in score is mostly certification tier and distance, not customer satisfaction.

1. Jersey Roofing — TRB Score 92.1

Trades as Jersey Roofing; listed on the GAF registry as Jersey Roofing LLC.

Jersey Roofing is based in Garfield, NJ, in business since 1984, led by Bruno Koreta, BBB accredited since 28 April 2015, and holds President’s Club standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: President’s Club (GAF), GuildQuality member. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

  • Accredited since 28 April 2015. BBB
  • Customer satisfaction survey profile. GuildQuality

What they actually do. Residential roofing across northern New Jersey; a family business since 1984.

Why it ranks here. President’s Club with a perfect 5.0 across 470 reviews, scoring 92.1 and leading second place by 2.6 points.

Best fit for: Bergen and Passaic County homeowners.

What we would want clarified. Seventeen miles from the metro centre in New Jersey. Homeowners in the five boroughs should ask for a New York City Home Improvement Contractor licence before signing. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (201) 982-2718, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

2. Brothers Aluminum — TRB Score 89.4

Trades as Brothers Aluminum; listed on the GAF registry as Brothers Aluminum Home Improvements Corp.

Brothers Aluminum is based in Valley Stream, NY, in business since 1980, led by Ted Boultadakis, BBB accredited since 16 May 2014, A+, and holds President’s Club standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: President’s Club (GAF), Nassau County home improvement licence H18H5290000. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

What they actually do. Roofing, siding and windows across Long Island and Queens.

Why it ranks here. President’s Club, 4.9 across 400 reviews, scoring 89.4. The only New York-based firm in the top five and, at 12 miles, among the closest.

Best fit for: Nassau County and eastern Queens homeowners.

What we would want clarified. BBB carries two profiles for the business under slightly different names, and its current corporation dates from 2013 although the company cites 1980. Queens and Brooklyn homeowners should confirm a New York City licence as well as the Nassau one. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

3. American Home Contractors — TRB Score 88.9

Trades as American Home Contractors; listed on the GAF registry as American Home Contractors Inc.

American Home Contractors is based in Florham Park, NJ, led by Jon Parker, Not accredited, and holds President’s Club standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: President’s Club (GAF), GuildQuality member. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

What they actually do. Roofing, siding and windows across Morris, Union and Essex counties.

Why it ranks here. President’s Club with a perfect 5.0 across 267 reviews, scoring 88.9.

Best fit for: Morris County and western Essex County homeowners.

What we would want clarified. Not BBB accredited, and at 25 miles the farthest of the five. It is unrelated to American Home Contractors, LLC of Fulton, Maryland, which ranks in the Washington metro, so check the New Jersey registration number on the contract. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

4. Donny’s Home Improvement — TRB Score 88.5

Donny’s Home Improvement is based in Elmwood Park, NJ, BBB accredited since 27 December 2022, and holds President’s Club standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: President’s Club (GAF), GuildQuality member. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

What they actually do. Roofing and home improvement across Bergen and Passaic counties.

Why it ranks here. President’s Club with a perfect 5.0 across 123 reviews, scoring 88.5.

Best fit for: Bergen County homeowners who want a smaller owner-run firm.

What we would want clarified. Public sources disagree on how long the business has traded: BBB recorded four years in business at accreditation in 2022, while other listings cite two decades. Ask for the New Jersey registration date and references from jobs at least five years old. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

5. American Roofing and Siding — TRB Score 87.9

American Roofing and Siding is based in Nutley, NJ, and holds President’s Club standing on the GAF certification registry.

Score component Points Max
Certification tier 35 35
Adjusted rating 36.2 40

Independently corroborated:

  • Customer review profile for American Roofing and Siding, Nutley. HomeAdvisor

What they actually do. Roofing, siding and windows in northern New Jersey.

Why it ranks here. President’s Club, 4.9 across 134 reviews, scoring 87.9 and the closest of the five to the centre at 11 miles.

Best fit for: Nutley, Belleville and eastern Essex County homeowners.

What we would want clarified. Several similarly named roofing companies operate in Nutley and neighbouring Belleville, and public records attach different owners and addresses to them, so we could not confirm a single BBB profile for this listing. Match the New Jersey home improvement registration number on the contract to the company named on the certification registry before signing. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (973) 542-0710, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

What 2.5 inch hail does to a New York roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 22 counties of the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 270 hail reports, 2,153 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 40 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $7.2 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on New York in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
8 July 2021 2.5 in Hillsdale Manor Bergen
8 July 2021 2.5 in Hillsdale Manor Bergen
8 July 2021 2.0 in Hillsdale Bergen
2 August 2017 1.75 in Thornwood Westchester
6 July 2020 1.75 in Bergen Bergen
8 July 2021 1.75 in Emerson Bergen

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 8 July 2021 near Hillsdale Manor, measured at 2.5 inches. That is hen-egg sized. Two inches is the threshold at which insurers expect functional damage and full replacement claims.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 85 knots, about 98 mph, near Monmouth on 1 November 2019. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 40 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Ludingtonville on 15 May 2018.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 1 November 2019 event near Monmouth, reproduced verbatim:

A National Weather Service survey team determined that straight line winds of approximately 100 miles per hour caused damage in Wall Township near the Monmouth Jet Center airfield. A recreational trailer was lifted and rolled approximately 50 feet, significantly damaging other nearby parked vehicles. Windows were blown out of several vehicles in the parking lot of an auto repair and tire shop. The shop building sustained substantial roof and wall collapse. Several large structural beams were tossed over 300 feet away into a nearby field. Roofing debris was lofted and scattered up to approximately 0.3 miles away from the structure. A few trees were snapped and uprooted along North Airport…

That is what the specification has to anticipate here, written up by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in July (867), June (541), August (335). The worst years on record were 2020 (442), 2019 (435), 2021 (370). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in New York, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. New York sees enough damaging hail that a Class 4 impact-rated shingle is worth pricing, though not automatically worth buying. Get both quotes and weigh the premium against any insurance discount.

Before you sign anything in New York

There is no state roofing licence in NY. New York issues no statewide roofing licence and no statewide general contractor licence. Roofing is licensed locally, and whether a licence exists at all depends on which county or city the work happens in.

New York City requires a Home Improvement Contractor licence from the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, involving a written exam, workers compensation and general liability certificates, a sales tax Certificate of Authority and proof of EPA certification. Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, and the City of Buffalo, run their own separate licensing bureaus.

That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.

Check here: NYC DCWP Home Improvement Contractor licence. Confirm the contractor is licensed in the specific county where your home sits, not merely somewhere in the metro. A Westchester licence does not authorise work in Nassau.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

The shape of the New York contractor market

24 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ statistical area, of which 17 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 8,394 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.921. The statistical area had a 2024 population of 19,940,274, a change of -0.71% against the 2020 census base, per the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates.

How these New York rankings were produced

Every contractor in the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 24 certified contractors, of whom 17 hold President’s Club standing and 7 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.921. The top five were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. The findings are printed above whether they flatter the contractor or not, and nobody paid to appear.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Common questions about roofers in New York

Who is the best roofer in New York, NY?

Jersey Roofing of Garfield, NJ scores highest in the New York metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score, at 92.1 out of 100 as of September 2026. It holds President’s Club certification with a 5.0 rating across 470 reviews. Highest-scoring is not the same as best fit for your specific job, and the four companies behind it score within 4.2 points.

How many certified roofing contractors serve New York?

24 contractors on the GAF certification registry serve the principal cities of the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ statistical area as of September 2026, of which 17 hold President’s Club status.

How much damaging hail does New York get?

The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ statistical area recorded 168 hail reports of 1 inch or larger and 3 of 2 inches or larger between 2016 and 2025 in the NOAA Storm Events Database. The largest hailstone reported measured 2.5 inches.

Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?

No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on the top five.

What was the worst hailstorm in New York in the last ten years?

The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 2.5 inches, reported near Hillsdale Manor on 8 July 2021. That is hen-egg sized. Two inches is the threshold at which insurers expect functional damage and full replacement claims. Across the decade the metro recorded 270 hail reports. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $7.2 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

When is the worst time of year for roof damage in New York?

Severe-weather reports in the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ statistical area cluster in July, June, August, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. If the work can wait, booking outside that window usually buys you shorter lead times and more of the contractor’s attention.

Do roofers need a licence in NY?

New York issues no statewide roofing licence and no statewide general contractor licence. Roofing is licensed locally, and whether a licence exists at all depends on which county or city the work happens in. New York City requires a Home Improvement Contractor licence from the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, involving a written exam, workers compensation and general liability certificates, a sales tax Certificate of Authority and proof of EPA certification. Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, and the City of Buffalo, run their own separate licensing bureaus.

What should I check before hiring a roofer in New York?

Confirm the contractor is licensed in the specific county where your home sits, not merely somewhere in the metro. A Westchester licence does not authorise work in Nassau.

Is New York a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in New York?

Wind, by a wide margin. The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ statistical area logged 2,153 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 168 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
